Congruent and Similar Figures (8th Grade Geometry)
Subject: Mathematics Grade Level: 8th Grade
Unit Plan: Geometry Day/Periods: Week 1 - Day 1
Topic: Congruent and Similar Figures & Integrating Technology
Content Standards:
2. Understand that a two-dimensional figure is congruent to another if the second can be obtained from the first by a sequence of rotations, reflections, and translations; given two congruent figures, describe a sequence that exhibits the congruence between them.
4. Understand that a two-dimensional figure is similar to another if the second can be obtained from the first by a sequence of rotations, reflections, translations, and dilations; given two similar two-dimensional figures, describe a sequence that exhibits the similarity between them.
Literacy Standards:
4.Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
6. Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and to interact and collaborate with others.
8. Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, assess the credibility and accuracy of each source, and integrate the information while avoiding plagiarism.
10. Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of tasks, purposes, and audiences.

We will be in the computer room.
Posted on the board. On the board. Will be on the board. Both the students and I will participate by writing on the board. |
DO NOW
Describe these two triangles. FOCUS QUESTION
How can we use the internet to learn about certain properties of two-dimensional figures? DIRECT INSTRUCTION The students are doing an internet workshop to begin the unit of geometry. They will begin the unit with the first planned lesson, Congruency and Similarity. This is an exercise where the students will learn, though guided websites and promoted questions, on the meaning of theses words before I cover them tomorrow. This lesson will be a student discovery lesson, a lesson where they have to discover the answers before I can teach them the answers. GUIDED INSTRUCTION ( main part of lesson) The students will answer the questions on the Internet Workshop ditto (below). This is an activity where they will learn new things for both the unit and the lesson for tomorrow. CLOSURE I will ask the students for their definitions and their pictures. Also answer any questions. ** Tomorrows lesson will be using this information plus other examples. The lesson will be held in the classroom. |
Internet Workshop
Congruent and Similar Figures
This Internet Workshop will teach you about congruent and similar figures. You will begin by finding out the meaning of these two words, on the website given. After you will continue your search online to produce and play with these figures as well as draw some things you find.
1. Using this website, http://www.amathsdictionaryforkids.com/dictionary.html, find the word Congruent and write the definition.
Draw two Congruent Figures.
2. Using the same website find the word Similar and define it.
Draw two Similar Figures.
3. What is the difference between similar and congruent figures?
4. Now that you know the difference between the Similar and Congruent figures play the game to see if you can correctly
distinguish between the two. The game can be played at http://www.harcourtschool.com/activity/similar_congruent/.
5.Using this website. Create two Congruent figures and two Similar figures. Draw and Label the figures
below. http://www.nctm.org/standards/content.aspx?id=25008
