Topic: Classroom Set-Up.
Reflection Number Nine.
I always remember those days in school when you walk into a classroom and the room has been changed around. Sometime the rows of desks became tables or the desks were all paired up. Than there was the times where the entire room turned ninety degree. Whatever the the case it was an exciting day. Little did I know as a student the rearrangement of the classroom was not to meant to be amaze me but served a purpose.
The way a classroom is set up says a lot about the teacher. If the teacher’s desk is in the front and center of the classroom the teacher seems distant from the students. If the desk are in rows it could be a classroom where students don’t work together. If the desk are placed in line of the window it could be to distracting the students. The color of the classroom is an important factor as well. The classroom can not be a bright color that is distracting but the walls can not be stark white either. What is placed and where it is placed must be taken into consideration when designing a classroom.
When you walked into my math class I want it to be a classroom that is open. The desk would be in pairs for easy collaboration between students. The desk would be spread apart far enough so it is easy for me to walk around to see and help the students. All the pairs would have a clear view of the board and or smart board. In the classroom there would be a bookshelf or a closet; this would hold text books and other reference books. The closet or bookshelf would also hold paper, pencils, rulers, compasses, markers and more. Around the room I would like to have bulletin boards to show off students work and post important announcements. On the wall there is a would be a clock to keep on track there would also be shape for geometry lessons and other math related posters for reference.
Whatever the set up the classroom should be a place of learning. It should be a place where students can work with each, learn from the teacher and each other. The classroom should not be a jail cell student are trapped in for fifty-five minutes but a place of creativity and learning.

Topic: Final Review
Reflection Number Thirteen.
It’s that time of year again, the time of year when all you can think about is summer. The only thing standing in between you and that beach is finals. The dreaded test at the end of the semester which you need to recall the entire semester in two hours. You think to yourself how am I suppose to do this? Who’s idea was this anyway? So many unanswered questions every year.
Student work all year. They write papers, do projects, take tests and so much more. But why as teachers do we think they need to recall all that information right before the end of the school year? Is it because we want to make sure they are really good at cramming information back in their head? Is it because we did not give out enough work during the year? I believe that we are just doing it because we are following the teachers before us. Is that reason enough to continue to give cumulative finals right before summer or the end of the semester. I believe that is not reason enough.
I think that we do have to wrap up the year, one last thing before our students go off for the summer. I don’t think that thing is one giant test either. We need to find a way to celebrate learning. If our students shared with us one or two things they learned, not including the last class, or maybe something that they wanted to learn more about. Having the students share with the class they are more likely to remember that information then entire years worth.
The only way to change things or event you do not like is to speak up and find others who agree. Together teachers can make a difference and let administration know that finals are nothing more than a test that really tells us nothing about students. Teachers know their students and what grades they are capable of earning by June. What they don’t know is what they really enjoyed learning and what they might want to continue to learn.
